Should I Go To The University of Arizona

Should I Go To The University of Arizona The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jennifer is a junior at The University of Arizona majoring in Physiology. She specializes inmany subjects in Tucson including World History tutoring, Psychology tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, and more. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jennifer: The campus is in the middle of Tucson, which is a larger town in Arizona, but the campus has never felt unsafe in anyway! There are many things that the university does to keep its students safe, from maintaining a large campus police to having a program called SafeRide. SafeRide will drop you off at locations during the night if you feel unsafe, and it will also pick you up!Tucson's bus system is called the SunTran, and its routes are extremely extensive and will drive you to all corners of the city. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jennifer: Every teacher and TA is required by the school to have set office hours in which students can come in and receive help. Usually, even if those hours interfere with other plans, teachers are willing to schedule extra office hours to meet up. Advisors are harder to get a hold of, as you have to make a specific appointment in advance, but they are definitely accessible. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jennifer: Dorm life is the best! There are at least 20 dorms on campus, all ranging in price, size, and location. It is a great way to make friends, and they're extremely convenient. You don't have to pick any certain meal plan if you live in the dorm; meal plans are sold separately. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jennifer: The University of Arizona has a broad spectrum of majors, a lot of which are nationally ranked. I am currently studying Physiology, an extremely unique major to the college.I am studying Physiology because I believe it will give me the best background to go into medicine. The university supports every student in whatever they desire to be. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jennifer: It was extremely easy for me to make friends on campus, as I was living in the dorms and became close to all of my neighbors.Greek life does play a big role in our campus, with about 30% of students being in Greek life. However, it is certainly not necessary to be involved in Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jennifer: The most important thing we have on campus is called the Think Tank.It supports students with student-to-student tutoring, and it has really helped me through tough times in some of my classes! It's also cool because many teachers hold their office hours in the Think Tank, so you can get help from them there, too. As for recruiting opportunities, the university holds job fairs at least twice a semester. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jennifer: I love the libraries we have on campus! The most popular libraries we have are the Main Library and the Science Engineering Library, but we also have a Medical Library and an Art/Music Library. They are all very spacious, even though they definitely tend to get crowded around finals time. My favorite part about the libraries is getting my own individual study room; it allows me to concentrate better! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jennifer: Tucson is a medium-sized town with a lot of random things to do. I would say that in general, students tend to stay around campus, just because there are more student-oriented things to do. University Street and Fourth Avenue are big hang out spots, as they have restaurants, bookstores, clothing stores, and more. The downtown area isn't real big in Tucson, but they are attempting to renovate it, and soon enough, a streetcar will run from the university to downtown. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jennifer: The university is quite large, with over 30,000 students.I knew this going into college, and it was what I wanted! It gives you an opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Some of the classes tend to be large, but you can definitely find many that are 20-30 students, especially Language courses. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jennifer: One of my most memorable teachers was for Calculus 1.I had a graduate student teacher, named George! He was pretty much the most amazing math teacher ever, especially because I am a terrible math student.I constantly went in for help in his office hours, and I finally was able to progress, and advance at the end of the semester! He always made class fun, and it made me like math more! Check out Jennifers tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

The Writing Process Its Actually a Process!

The Writing Process It's Actually a Process! Improving Academic Performance When a paper is looming, it can be easy to get into absolutes and assume that, unless you can get something really fantastic down in the next couple of hours, you’re doomed. But let’s remember the old adage Rome wasn’t built in a day - and neither was your essay, short story, or research project. All good writing comes from rewriting. Even the greatest writers on earth will admit that their first drafts and ideas were often lackluster. Sometimes downright terrible. So don’t be discouraged. Be willing to write poorly, and then be willing to improve! (Remember that growth mindset!) It’s always best to start with some free writing, which used to be called brainstorming, to get your ideas down first. This can be done in a variety of ways, depending on the type of learner and writer you are. Some people benefit from diagrams and jotting notes, others outlines, and some (like me) get right to business writing paragraphs to then go back to edit and rearrange. You can even get creative and use apps on your iPhone! (Just, avoid texting.) Let your ideas flow. Don’t censor yourself. A good rule of thumb is to set a timer for fifteen minutes and to continue writing (or typing) for that entire stretch. Don’t worry during this brainstorming session if your ideas make sense or are good enough or are written in gorgeous prose. Just get the ideas flowing. This might be the place where you develop an interesting thesis statement or main idea or where you solidify several ideas to support your argument. If you are a procrastinator, I recommend that you follow a strategy I used all through high school, college, and graduate school when I had giant papers assigned to me: start right away. I don’t mean write the whole thing right away. I just mean start. Ten minutes. Or two. Even if you only open a document and write a heading and a first sentence, this will help tremendously, because you will feel you have at least gotten your foot in the door. It takes some mental pressure off, and you will find you are more inclined to return to the document regularly over the coming weeks before turning in a rough or final draft. There won’t be a paper you haven’t even started hanging over your head. You’ll say to yourself, I’ve got my thesis or a paragraph down! It’s a great motivational tool and a stress reliever. Once you’ve got your main ideas down in note, outline, or free writing form, hunker down and dig in. Again, set a timer, for thirty minutes to ninety minutes (or in other increments that work for you) and commit to writing for that entire stretch. Again, don’t worry so much if your writing feels shaky or “bad” - just write. Do this several times until you have what we call a rough or first draft. This means you have transformed notes and outlines into full sentences and paragraphs. You have structure to what you’ve written, whether that means a beginning, middle, and end of a story, or five paragraphs that help argue a solid thesis statement. With this rough draft, the refinery process can take place, and this is where some real magic happens. I recommend first that you allow a teacher (if applicable) to review your draft and provide feedback. A peer editor can also be helpful, but make sure it is someone you trust to read carefully and closely and who understands the objective of your writing piece. The last editor is you. Once you have your feedback and notes and the areas to remove or expand upon, enter the final phase, which requires close reading and the willingness to “kill your darlings” and tidy up each sentence in your work. Killing your darlings means you part with the words, sentences, or paragraphs that for some reason you really like but that you understand are not supporting the writing piece. As stated in an article on BusyTeacher, less is often more, especially in formal essay writing. And we don’t want to clog a story or narrative with unnecessary adjectives and adverbs or cliched metaphors. We want to tidy up run-on sentences. We want to say what we mean succinctly. We want strong verbs and eloquent prose, but we never want our writing to sound “fluffy.” Aim true. Kill off the words you don’t need. It feels great, trust me, like getting rid of clothes in your closet you never wear! Once you have done a few rounds of close editing on your own and feel you have made the writing the best it can be, let go. Surrender. Feel proud. And walk away. If you’re really dedicated and have the time, revisit it again with fresh eyes in a day or two. But don’t get into the habit of nitpicking something to death from a place of anxiety and criticism. Be proud that you went through a tried and true writing process. You’ll know when you’ve really given it your all! Tutoring Can Give Students The Edge When Applying To Medical And Dental Schools

Tutoring Can Give Students The Edge When Applying To Medical And Dental Schools MEDICAL AND DENTAL SCHOOLS ANALYSE ADMISSIONS TEST results from a variety of examinations, such as the UCAT, BMAT and GAMSAT, while deciding whether to admit or reject applicants. The test(s) a student must take will vary based on which schools were applied to. What is a common denominator, however, is that the tests are challenging. Students who want to optimise the odds of getting into one of their school choices will need to study hard, and getting help from tutors could give them the edge over competition. Going for academic excellence is one of the keys to achieving the dream of getting into a UK medical or dental school. While these schools do consider other factors beyond academic performance, it's safe to say that the RESULTS OF ADMISSION TESTS matter greatly. Students should get help with maths and science Many careers in medicine, medical science, and dentistry require strong educational credentials, and these credentials can't be obtained without post-secondary degrees. Before a student can become a doctor, medical scientist or dentist, they must build a strong foundation in maths and science. The earlier a student develops abilities and knowledge in these vital subjects, the better. Parents should encourage children who dream of being doctors, scientists or dentists to work hard at maths and science right from the start, and tutoring in these subjects can help keep them on track. Tutors are available to help at all levels, from primary levels to adult learner/casual learner, and everything in between. Of course, it's helpful if students have knacks for these two subjects, and most students who gravitate towards medicine and dentistry do have some natural talent in maths and science. Sometimes, though, natural aptitude is not enough because students DON'T KNOW THE RIGHT WAYS TO STUDY, or need support from tutors in order to grasp concepts, build academic confidence, and do well on tests. Why are maths and science so important? Doctors need to understand plenty of mathematical processes in order to calculate correct dosages of medication, conduct tests, AND DESIGN TREATMENT PLANS. Dentists must use scientific and mathematical processes in their daily duties, whether they're creating mouthguards that KEEP TEETH PROTECTED FROM INJURY, administering local anaesthetics, or doing cleanings or fillings. Doctors and dentists need superb maths and science skills in order excel in the field. Good English skills are important too Yes, maths and science matter a lot, but so do great communication skills, both in writing and in conversation. Students who develop top-notch English skills will find it easier to do well when they take admissions tests for medical and dental schools. Students who are great at maths and science but fall short in English may find that they don't do as well on admissions tests as they might. English tutors provide assistance online or in person to help students master grammar, syntax, spelling, essay skills, and so many other aspects of English classes and examinations. Working with a tutor is one of the wisest ways to edge out the competition when it comes to getting admitted to medical or dental school, and there will be competition. Students who are disciplined about academics, and open-minded enough to welcome talented and patient tutors into their lives, will find that they reap the rewards of their hard work on examination days. Tutors guide students down the educational pathways that lead to medical and dental careers.

Speak Up, Please!

Speak Up, Please! So in my very last semester at the community college, before transferring to a university, I found myself sitting in a speech class. Now I was not particularly interested in a speech class. I had no desires to do public speaking any time soon. The only reason I was taking this class was because it was a requirement in order to transfer to the university I had chosen. I have heard it said that on a list of things people are afraid of, public speaking is second only to death. Well, I can’t say that it was that drastic for me but I was not looking forward to it. In fact, the classroom I was sitting in that first day must have had 50 plus students there. This would have included hopeful add-ons and such. In the junior college I attended you rarely saw a room that crowded. On that first day, once the instructor had all the logistics out of the way, he asked; “How many of you are in your last semester here?”   90 percent of the students raised their hands. Well, there you go, not a course on the top of folks list of favorite subjects. No surprise though. My biggest surprise was walking out of there with an “A” at the end of the course. Here are a few little tips from a student who took this advice literally, and did well. First pick topics that you truly enjoy. If you love the subject chances are you are already very familiar with it. Also it will be related to the audience that you are into this topic, even if you are nervous about standing up there with all eyes staring at you, waiting for you to goof up so they can explode into a rage of laughter and judgment at your expense. Wait, did I just say that out loud? Just kidding. Just be prepared. When writing out your first speech, go ahead and just put down every word for now. Each time you go through the speech you will eliminate some text, so that your notes will become more like queue-card reminders, rather than your speech word for word. By the time you are ready to practice your speech on friends or family, you should end up with short simple notes that remind you where you are and what point you are making right now. If you are the nervous type when it comes to standing in front of a room full of people, in other words, most of us, your best bet for success is to practice, practice, practice! That is the most sure fire way to get your message across, even if you flub up here or there. In fact when you are so familiar with your topic people will not notice that you missed something because the rest of your material will be so convincingly clear that no one would notice what you skipped along the way. You will find, as I have that those skills in speech class will come in handy down the road of life, including everything from standing up in traffic court to defend and fight a ticket to, giving a eulogy at a memorial service for a loved one. And when all else fails…. Get a Tutor!

Human Life is an Unceasing Sequence of Single Actions

Human Life is an Unceasing Sequence of Single Actions Ludwing von Mises (1881-1973) is one of the most notable economists of the twentieth century and the foremost economist of the Austrian school of economics. Mises demonstrated that free markets, the division of labor, and private capital investment is the only possible path to the prosperity of the human race. He also showed that government intervention, in addition to hampering and crippling the market, would prove counter-productive leading inevitably to socialism. In his masterpiece Human Action Mises writes: Human life is an unceasing sequence of single actions. Acting man is eager to achieve more satisfactory state of affairs than provided by the status quo . His mind imagines conditions which suit him better, and his action aims at bringing about this desired state. With each action human climb one step on the latter of achievements; never to cease; never to yield. In case youre interested in economics I encourage you to climb that next step and become educated about economics; perhaps even with the help of one the  3000 economics tutors  at Tutorz.com.

AP Chemistry Kinetics - The Core Concepts

AP Chemistry Kinetics - The Core ConceptsLike any other courses in AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry Kinetics is an interactive course that allows students to ask questions and get answers. The class is divided into seven modules, each one starting with a lecture that addresses all the basic concepts of chemistry and explains the major concepts that are studied in the class. These lectures are intended to guide students through the courses' core topics, and help them get acquainted with the concepts and methods of the course. In order to prepare them for the actual AP Chemistry and Math course, some strong students may also prepare a list of all the topics they have to learn in order to get a better understanding of the course. There are three of the six topics that are not covered in the Introduction lecture.Introductory is designed to introduce students to the subjects of chemical physics, thermal and mechanical properties of matter, and organic chemistry. This lecture also serves as a pri mer for AP Chemistry Kinetics because it provides the foundations for this subject and gives its study a significant conceptual base. The third module on Organic Chemistry teaches students the concepts of chemical bonding mechanisms in chemistry. Students are also taught the various phases of organic compounds. Organic Chemistry has a number of subtopics such as carbocycle science, gas chemistry, and spectroscopy. Finally, students are able to implement the concepts of this course through Practice Assignments, which is based on the concepts learned in the previous lecture. The concepts taught in these practice assignments are incorporated in the curriculum and integrated into the final exam.Different activities are conducted for each topic, and activities ranging from making calculations, problem solving, numerical exercises, and reading chemical equations are conducted throughout the class. This allows students to get acquainted with the concepts they have learned and helps them form ulate questions for the practice assignment. In AP Chemistry Kinetics, students learn the fundamentals of chemical reactions and the properties of atoms and molecules. This prepares them for further studies in chemical biology, condensed matter physics, and quantitative mechanics. It also helps students to understand the relationships between physical and chemical properties and allows them to conceptualize the applications of chemistry.
